We (Melbourne and Maria) have designed a 6-day photo tour and workshop that will allow you to capture remarkable images of the fascinating temples and the charming surrounding areas. The tour is cost effective due mainly to the fact that air travel from Jakarta to Siem Reap (the lovely town close to the temple site) is convenient and affordable. Also, you only require visa-on-arrival in Cambodia, which makes life easy.No matter what you have read or photos you have seen, you will not be fully prepared for your first walk down the causeway of Angkor Wat! Of course, there are always gazillions of tourists at this World Heritage Site, no wonder really, since it is absolutely stunning and breathtaking. Our detailed surveys of the temples and ever-changing lighting conditions have allowed us to create a flexible itinerary that will help us to avoid tourists, and will have us placed at chosen temple sites at times most appropriate for photography.
Tours for tourists are set up to be convenient for the tour companies. We have turned their agendas upside down and schedule our visits for crowd avoidance and best lighting possibilities. During our tour you will visit many of the major temples and we will visit a few that some tourists rarely get to see. To give us all a break from being “templed-out”, we spend part of one day exploring a floating village and flooded forest on Tonle Sap Lake.
Tonle Sap Lake too is a paradise for photographers with houses on stilts and people going about their daily activities. You will paddle around an “other-world” flooded forest where the water level is often near the topmost branches of the trees. Our small group (max 8 participants) travels in an air-conditioned roomy bus. We will have opportunities to rent tuk-tuks (motor-bike driven carriages), eat Khmer food, bargain at the local market and quench our thirst at the inviting bars and eateries on Pub Street.
Our comfortable hotel is strategically situated just a minute’s walk from the hub of the “action” of restaurants and night life. You won’t be partying much because as photographers we have to be out of bed early every morning to make the most of the beautiful light.
We try and take a leisurely break at lunch times and relax a while before venturing out again in the afternoons for more photo-ops. During our visits to the temples we may be able to capture photographs of monks carrying out ritual cleansing baths. One evening we attend a colorful traditional Apsara Dance performance. We can capture semi-aerial photographs by going aloft in a tethered observation balloon which affords us great views of the Angkor Wat Archaeological Park.
Our small group size ensures that everyone receives “one-on-one” guidance and coaching from Melbourne. No matter what your level of experience, we guarantee your photography skills will be “fast-tracked” during the program. Melbourne will demonstrate many photography techniques and will aid you with composition and help you to “SEE” light.
Melbourne will share his 30 years of shooting experience and will discuss the potential benefits of learning Adobe Photoshop, so that you can be thinking of alternative interpretations of the scenes you are capturing. He will also show you how to set up to capture HDR and Panoramas. Angkor Wat lends itself perfectly to these techniques.
During our time together Melbourne will hold short workshops and reviews so that you can learn creative ways of exploring new techniques of capturing and interpreting your photographs. Cambodia is very safe. The locals are friendly and many of them speak English. Prices are very affordable. Souvenir shopperswill love it, as will those who enjoy their food!
